Handoffs

A handoff is the context passed on so another agent can continue where one left off. Coordigent builds it from what it recorded about the first agent, so nobody has to write a summary by hand.

What a handoff contains

  • What the agent was asked to do: its first prompt.
  • The plan: the agent's latest to-do list, split into done and still to do.
  • The files it edited, most-edited first.
  • Its recent commands and its commits.
  • Its branch and the commit it started from.
  • The latest summary of the agent's work, when one exists.
  • Pull request feedback and the latest coord review verdict, when there are any.

Under the project's default visibility, a handoff you read for a teammate's agent leaves out their prompt text and summary. Paths, branches, commands and commits are always included.

Handoffs at compaction

When Claude Code compacts its context, Coordigent writes a handoff on your machine, with no network and no model. It is used in two ways:

  • The same agent gets it back after compaction, so nothing important is lost.
  • A new agent you start in the same checkout within 12 hours gets the newest handoff another agent left there, introduced as "From your previous session".

Handoffs stay on this machine and are deleted after 7 days. To see them:

List handoffs: ● still open, ○ already taken

coord handoff

Print one as the next agent would see it

coord handoff --show <id>

Delete them all

coord handoff --clear

Taking over another agent's work

coord takeover picks up the work of any agent in your project, yours or a teammate's. It needs a login, because it reads the handoff from the server.

coord takeover <agent>

<agent> is the short id coord status shows (235b), or the full id; the website's Copy takeover command button gives you the whole command. It prepares the handoff, and the next agent you start in that repo receives it when it starts. This works for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. For any other client, print the handoff and paste it in:

coord takeover <agent> --print

Take over an agent that is Idle or Ended. If the agent is still active, coord takeover warns you, because two agents would then be doing the same work.

If its work is not in your checkout (it ran on a teammate's machine and was never committed, or its branch or newest commit is not here yet), the handoff says so instead of telling your agent to read git log and git diff: ask the teammate to commit and push it, or git fetch once they have. Run coord takeover inside your clone of the repo; anywhere else it does not check.

Where you find it

  • Website. An agent's record shows its handoff summary, when coord summarize wrote one. An Idle or Ended agent's record has a Copy takeover command button.
  • VS Code. Take over agent… and Show handoff… offer a list of agents to pick from.
  • Your agent. The get_handoff tool returns an agent's handoff. See MCP tools.
  • Runs. coord sessions start --from <agent> starts a new run seeded with that agent's handoff. See Runs.
